On
Friday July 19th, at the Balboa School Theater, a meeting was held between
the Board of Directors of the Panama Canal and its users to speak about
a possible tariffs hike. The opinion of the users was unanimous, everyone
said that it was not the moment to apply such hikes and that in any case;
they should be applied on a scale basis.
We, at Fort Amador Resort & Marina, believe that the price hike, even
though it might be necessary, will bring as a consequence, the reduction
in calls for cruise ships as well as yachts into the Pacific, and we think
that it would be prudent that such price hikes should be done on a scale
form, allowing for a minor impact.
We are having
talks with the Maritime Authority, Panama Canal Authority, IPAT and other
entities of the government to present our analysis, which basically shows
that cruise ships only represent 2% of Canal Traffic and that on the other
hand, the amount of tourists that will arrive at the Pacific represent
a larger economic impact.
